Singer Shilpa Rao has spoken of heartbreak after her performance at Mumbai's Bollywood Music Project ended abruptly on Saturday, cutting short her set at the event's tenth-anniversary edition.

The artist took to Instagram to share her frustration at the turn of events, while thanking the crowd for staying supportive after the sound was cut.

Crowd kept chanting her name

She said attendees kept chanting her name in spite of the disruption, and she vowed to perform in Mumbai once more.

"Mumbai, a little piece of my heart broke tonight. It hurts deeply to have something so beautiful taken away from us like this," she wrote.

"But even when the music stopped, you did not. The way you kept calling my name, the love in your voices. I could feel it all. Our story tonight was left unfinished. I promise, I will come back. I love you, Mumbai. Forever and ever. Shilpa," she added.

A career from Tose Naina to Chaleya

Shilpa began her career in playback singing in 2007 with the song "Tose Naina" from the movie Anwar. She achieved broader acclaim with "Khuda Jaane" from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008).

Through her career, she has built an eclectic discography, including "Bulleya" from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, "Ghungroo" from War, and "Chaleya" from Jawan. The last song earned her the National Film Award for Best Playback Singer (Female).

What the disruption means for fans

The abrupt end to the set left many attendees disheartened, even as the singer's note turned the disappointment into a promise of a return performance in Mumbai.
