Jio Platforms' Rs 30,213 crore initial public offering, the largest in India's market history, was fully subscribed within about 100 minutes of opening on Wednesday and closed the first day at 3.01 times subscription. Institutional investors drove the demand, bidding more than nine times their reserved quota, even as retail investors stayed cautious. The issue remains open until Friday, October 23, with allotment scheduled for October 26 and a listing expected around October 28.
Jio IPO Day 1: Institutions Lead the Rush
According to exchange data, the qualified institutional buyers' portion was subscribed 9.02 times by the close of the first day. Non-institutional investors bid 1.58 times their quota, Reliance Industries shareholders 1.38 times the shares reserved for them, and employees 1.30 times their reserved portion.
The anchor book had set the tone a day earlier. Jio Platforms raised Rs 8,109.84 crore from 212 anchor investors on Tuesday, including Rs 499.98 crore from LIC, currently the largest single anchor cheque in Indian IPO history, in what the company said was the first fully digital, paperless anchor allocation in the country.
Retail investors hold back on day one
The retail portion was subscribed only 0.68 times on the first day, the one soft spot in an otherwise heavily bid issue. Brokers attributed the caution to the issue's size and price, although retail bidding in large issues typically builds on the second and third days as applications move from observation to action.
The scale of the offering explains part of the dynamic. At Rs 30,213 crore, the issue is larger than the entire annual IPO fundraising of many past years, and its subscription numbers are being read as a referendum on Reliance's digital and telecom business as much as on the broader primary market.
A Weak Market Day Behind the Big Issue
The debut came on a soft day for Indian equities. The Sensex closed at 73,709.69, down 143.21 points, while the Nifty ended at 22,811.35, down 77.60 points, as the broader market stayed cautious through the session.
The issue closes on Friday, October 23. Allotment is scheduled for Monday, October 26, refunds and demat credits follow, and the shares are expected to list around Wednesday, October 28. Grey market premium figures quoted online for the issue are unofficial and unregulated, and do not indicate the eventual listing price.
