Three men are in custody within hours of an attack on policemen at an inter-state check post in Tharad. Tharad police arrested the trio after a Scorpio car broke through a barricade at Khoda check post and was driven at on-duty personnel during vehicle checking.
Diwali checking at an inter-state post
In view of the Diwali festival, intensive vehicle checking was underway at the inter-state check posts in the Tharad police station area. At Khoda check post, a Tharad police team was checking vehicles when a Scorpio car coming from the Sanchor side of Rajasthan looked suspicious, and police signalled it to stop.
Scorpio breaks the barricade
Instead of stopping, the driver sped the car forward, broke through the barricade put up for vehicle checking, and tried to run over the policemen on duty, allegedly with the intent to kill them. The car did not stop at the check post and the barricade was smashed in the attempt to flee.
Threats after the car stops
After this, the driver and the others got out of the car, abused the policemen, and taunted them over checking vehicles at the check post, telling them they had escaped only by luck that day. Police then registered a case over the incident and moved to trace the accused.
Three arrested, car and phones seized
Police arrested three men in connection with the case within hours. The arrested men are Hiren alias Honey Sagathabhai Rajput of Piluda in Tharad, Kiran Baldevbhai Joshi of Vami in Tharad, and Prince Prakashbhai Joshi of Vami in Tharad. The Scorpio car used in the crime and three mobile phones were seized, and further proceedings are underway.
One accused already faces a drugs case
Of those arrested, Hiren alias Honey already has a criminal history. A case under sections 8(c), 21(b), 22(b) and 26 of the NDPS Act was earlier registered against him at Tharad police station. Police are continuing further action in the check post case.
